CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior Carrie Dail continued her
outstanding week of play with her second-straight game winning goal, this time
in overtime, as the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory
over North Florida Friday night at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C.
Dail, who netted the game winner in Monday's rescheduled match at East
Carolina, put away the game winner just over a minute into the second extra
frame. Sophomore Jessica Ryan dribbled through the Osprey defense and poked the
ball ahead to a streaking Dail running down the middle of the field. She
received the ball in-stride and sent a low shot underneath a charging Brittany Hahn
from the UNF cage for the clincher at 101:14.
"I think this young team is starting to show a lot of good signs in terms of
maturity," head coach John Cullen said. "Whether it's resilience, perseverance
or just good character. I'm very proud of our girls because as a young team, it's
easy for the heads to sag and the shoulders to drop but we got after them and
they responded well."
Dail's winner came after she helped Charlotte (4-2) knot the scoring during the
second half. Finding themselves down one at the intermission, the 49ers came
out refocused and with renewed energy during the second 45 minutes.
She took the ball down the right side, almost to the end line, before crossing
it back towards the 18-yard box. Waiting for the pass was sophomore Amanda
Jones, who headed it over a diving Hahn at the near post for the equalizer at
50:59. It would be just one of two shots for Charlotte in the period, and one
of only a half dozen for the match, as North Florida (2-5) won the shot battle,
12-6.
The Ospreys jumped out in front at 38:27 when Michele Larrinaga corralled a
loose ball on the left side the cage following a UNF corner kick. She then
quickly passed it to Kathryne Husted, who fired it home past 49er keeper Alex
Kubrick to put the visitors on top, 1-0.
Charlotte played stout defense throughout the match, denying chances, and
keeping its opponent to one goal or less for the fourth time in six contests to
open the campaign.
The 49ers will be back in action when they play host to Clemson at 1 p.m.
Sunday. The Tigers tied Davidson, 1-1, Friday night and bring a 5-1-1 record
into the contest.
