LEXINGTON, KY - Behind goals by Jennings Rex and Tyler Gibson and another stellar defensive effort, the seventh-ranked Charlotte 49ers (3-0-1) remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 victory over Stony Brook in the University of Kentucky Invitational.

"It was a great overall performance by our team," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "Stony Brook is a physical team who came right at us and we did a very good job on the defensive end. It was also great that all our hard work was rewarded with goals tonight."

Charlotte took the lead for good when Gibson converted on a penalty kick  in the 19th  minute. The penalty kick was caused after Donnie Smith was fouled in the box after making a great run. Gibson has now scored eight career goals.

The 49ers made it 2-0 when Rex scored his first of two goals when he put an Isaac Caughran cross into the back of the net in the 24th minute.

Rex scored his second goal when he corralled a Will Mayhew shot that banged off the post. He put the shot into the lower corner of the goal in the 84th  minute. Rex has now scored 15 goals in his career.

Charlotte continued their string of dominating the run of play as the 49ers finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. This season, the 49ers have a 79-24 advantage in shots and a 43-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Rex led the 49ers with four shots in this game. Donnie Smith added three shots. While Thomas Allen and Giuseppe Gentile tallied two shots apiece.

Charlotte concludes their play in the UK Invitational when they play the University of Kentucky, Sunday, September 9 at 2:30 pm.
