CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Various donors packed the Student Activity Center (SAC) to donate their time, effort, and blood in the support of the annual September 11 Memorial Blood Drive hosted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on Thursday afternoon.

For the 11th consecutive year, Charlotte student-athletes have made it their goal to organize the blood drive and give back to the community. The blood drive also served as another opportunity for 49ers to engage with their peers and others in the community.

Charlotte surpassed its goal of collecting 90 units with a grand total of 94 donations. Forty-one people were first-time donors and 36 student-athletes donated blood. In addition, 21 student-athletes had someone donate on their behalf.

But the student-athletes did more than give blood. On top of donating, 47 student-athletes volunteered their time by handing out flyers around campus, passing out drinks and food to donors, and controlling the flow of the blood drive.

"It's a good feeling to donate blood and know that you can save a life," explained freshman Brett Lang of the Charlotte baseball team.

The baseball and football teams made their presence known at the drive as they served as the majority of the volunteers.

"It's the least we can do," said baseball player Patric King. "It means a lot to me and our team. It's a tradition for our team and we look forward to doing it every year."

"Thanks to the involvement of our student-athletes, the blood drive was a huge success," said Assistant Director and Life & Skills Coordinator Rachel Ramey. "We reached our goal of collecting 90 units of blood because of the efforts our student-athletes put forward on Thursday."
