CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
The Charlotte 49ers women's
soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Transamerica Field for a
three-game homestand, starting at 7 p.m. Friday against North Florida. The
49ers will also be at home Sunday against Clemson and Thursday against
"When you are winning, you want to keep that feel-good factor," head coach John
Cullen said. "If you ever lose a game, you want to get it out of your system as
soon as possible. I think the manner in which we won showed characteristics
which we'll need the rest of the season.
"We have two more great games this weekend. We're excited about playing in
front of our home fans, after being gone for a couple weeks now. It's always
good to get back to Transamerica Field and play in front of Niner Nation."
Charlotte dealt with adversity in its last outing to improve its record to 3-2.
The team was set to play at East Carolina Sunday, but after one half, a
lightning storm forced the game to be called and rescheduled for Monday night.
The postponement did not prove to be bothersome for the 49ers, as they put the
Pirates away 1-0 behind a Carrie Dail first-half score.
Dail became just the fourth player to tally a goal on the young season, joining
Amanda Jones and leading scorer Sara Trexler. Dail also is one part of a trio,
including Taylor Rovito and Darby Broeker, to register an assist thus far.
While the offensive numbers have been slow to get started, it has been on the
defensive side where Charlotte has kept itself in games and with a winning
record through the first five matches.
Defensively, the 49ers have posted two shutouts, including Monday's in-state
triumph, among their three wins. Alex Kubrick has been in net for each of those
three contests and enters the weekend with a 0.33 goals-against average.
North Florida brings a 2-4 record into Friday's matchup, having lost its last
two matches to Georgia Southern and Navy. The Ospreys knocked off South
Carolina State and Gardner-Webb to pick up their two victories with 2012
Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Carolina Lencina leading the way with seven
Charlotte faced UNF for the first time a year ago, in the Ospreys' home
tournament to open the season, and the two teams concluded 110 minutes
deadlocked at 0-0.
Sunday's foe, Clemson, owns a 5-1 ledger entering the weekend. The Tigers,
whose only setback is a 1-0 overtime loss at Furman, will play at Davidson
Friday night to open a two-game swing in Mecklenburg County.
Clemson is 6-1 all-time against the 49ers; however, the lone Charlotte win came
in 2007 when the Tigers were ranked No. 17 nationally and it was played at
