Charlotte volleyball set one school record early by winning the opening set, but fell in four for their first loss of the season, a 3-1 defeat (23-25, 26-24, 25-20) at the hands of Clemson to start the Clemson Classic this weekend. The 49ers slip to 3-1 on the season, while the host Tigers improve to 4-0 this season.

The 49ers record came by winning the opening set and taking the first 10 sets of the season. The Tigers had a bevy of errors in the first set, with Charlotte capitalizing on opportunities to get the opening-set victory. The Niners got a quick 3-1 lead, extended that lead to 9-4 and despite facing some tie scores, never trailed in the set.

The second set was tight in the early going, with neither team able to lead by more than two points, until, at 13-12, the Tigers finished out the set on 12-6 run to even the match and end Charlotte's set streak.

The third set saw Charlotte lead early, but unable to get a big lead, the Tigers closed and evened the set at 11. Clemson then surged ahead to lead by as many as four, at 19-15, until Charlotte put together an impressive run to force extra points in the set. Tied at 24, Clemson got a kill and a Niners error to win the set and take the 2-1 sets lead.

The fourth set played much like the third, with neither team able to pull away, the five-point margin actually the largest of the back-and-forth set.

Senior Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) posted her second double-double of the season, both coming in the last two matches. She had 18 digs and a team-best 13 kills. She is the first on the team to 50 kills this season, sitting at 51. She is at 1,027 for her career, passing Courtney Burg (1999-2002) for 16th on the all-time kills list for the program after the match. She is three shy of Natalie Washington (1990-93) for 15th and 10 away from Kat Hicks (2006-10) for 14th on the all-time list at Charlotte.

Senior libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led Charlotte with 19 digs and senior setter Lily Vera (Anderson, S.C. / Stone Bridge HS) posted 43 assists. Junior Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) and freshman Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy) each added 11 kills for Charlotte.

The 49ers will face East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. before facing Chattanooga to finish the weekend at 6 p.m. ETSU (5-1) took out Chattanooga (3-1) in a 3-0 result to start the Friday session at Clemson.
