CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A 14-game non-conference
schedule, highlighted by home games against Kansas State, Florida State and
Davidson, in addition to road trips to TCU, FGCU, UCF and Georgia State's
holiday tournament, is set for the 2012-13 Charlotte women's basketball team.
"We're really excited about the non-conference schedule," head coach
Cara
Consuegra said. "Our goal every year is to put together a competitive schedule
that will allow us to continue to play in the postseason, as we have done the
last 10 years. We feel like this schedule gives us the ability to do that because
it features a lot of teams that have done that and a lot that play at the
highest level. We'll get to see some of those at home, others on the road. It
should be a great balance and challenge for our team this year."
The 49ers, who return all five starters and nine letterwinners from last
season's squad that reached the postseason for the 10
th-consecutive
year, will play host to eight total home games inside Halton Arena. In 2011-12,
Charlotte ranked among the top third in the Atlantic 10 for home attendance.
"We're really excited we're bringing in Florida State, a return from a game
last year. It should be a highly competitive game. Kansas State is coming in
two days after Thanksgiving, on that Saturday. They are a Big 12 team, so we're
certainly excited to have them in here. Not to mention, FGCU, who went to the
NCAA Tournament last year. We're excited about the quality of teams our fans
will be able to see in Halton Arena."
The schedule opens with a Nov. 3 exhibition against cross-city foe Johnson C.
Smith. A week later, the 49ers play host to in-state opponent North Carolina
Central in the first of four total games against schools within the Tar Heel
State.
After a road trip to TCU Nov. 14 for the first away tilt of the campaign,
Charlotte returns to its friendly confines of the home arena for a pair of
Saturday contests wrapped around the Thanksgiving holiday. The 49ers will face
FGCU Nov. 17 before welcoming Big 12 foe Kansas State a week later, two days
after the holiday.
November then closes with a quick mid-week excursion to Orlando to square off
against UCF.
Charlotte then will play host to the ACC's Florida State December 2, before
heading back on the road in-state to tangle with UNC Wilmington. The final game
before fall semester final exams will be Dec. 8 against Stetson.
A 10-day break for exams will conclude when a short drive to Greensboro for a
meeting with North Carolina A&T Dec. 18 is on the docket. The 49ers will
then play host to Davidson three days later in the final game prior to the
Christmas break.
"We're going to hit the road pretty early to face TCU, a well-coached team. It
will give our team the experience of traveling to the state of Texas a year
early, as we prepare for Conference USA play. We have to play in-state at UNC
Wilmington, which was a tough game here at home a year ago. But it's something
we're looking forward to as far as continuing to play teams within our state."
Charlotte then hits the road for the final time in the 2012 calendar year by
participating in the GSU Holiday Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 29-30. The 49ers open the two-day event by facing
Toledo and then depending on the outcome of the other game, will meet either
host Georgia State or Mississippi Valley State the next day.
"We're really excited about playing in the tournament. We enjoy recruiting in
the Atlanta area, so for us to be able to go down there and play in that
tournament, it will be great for recruiting and our players. We have three
freshmen on this year's team all from that area. We open it up with Toledo, who
has been a very good team the last couple years. It will be a great opportunity
for our team in general."
Once the calendar flips to 2013, two more non-conference contests await the
green and white. Charlotte will play host to Coppin State for the annual
Education Day celebration and then round out the slate with Patriot League foe
Colgate Jan. 3 and 6, respectively.
The entire schedule and game times, including the Atlantic 10 matchups, will be
released in the coming weeks. A full slate of promotions for the campaign also
will be unveiled at a later date.
