CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Charlotte 49ers softball team has released its schedule for the 2013 season.
Fans will be able to catch the 49ers in action a lot as they start the season by hosting three consecutive home tournaments at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex. Charlotte opens its season with the Fast Pitch Classic on Feb. 8-10. The 49ers will then host the Charlotte Classic on Feb. 16-17, followed by the 49ers Invitational on Feb. 22-24. Charlotte will host 11 teams in the three-week span, highlighted by Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Army.
"Home field advantage has become the norm for our program in February," said head coach Aimee DeVos. "We know how our field is going to play, we know the warm up routine and when you are just getting started it helps combat the early season nerves by being in comfortable surroundings."
The 49ers wrap up February by taking a quick trip to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina on Feb. 27. Charlotte will take its second road trip of the season when it competes in the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala., on March 1-3.
"The strength of our schedule is solid this upcoming season," explained DeVos. "UNC, Notre Dame, and Auburn will help us prepare for the tough A 10 schedule. We like to keep our schedule balanced with as much solid non-conference competition as possible."
The 49ers will face four in-state foes (Elon, Gardner-Webb, Campbell, and UNC-Greensboro) before starting its Atlantic 10 conference schedule on March.22 against Fordham at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex. Charlotte makes its way to Philadelphia, Pa., on Mar.28-30 for more A-10 action to take on Temple and St. Joseph's.
In April, the 49ers will host conference games with Rhode Island, Massachusetts, St. Louis, and Butler, while making road trips to Dayton and St. Bonaventure. Charlotte will also play three non-conference games at N.C. State and South Carolina, with its final home game against Winthrop on April 30.
"By the time we hit the conference schedule we will have settled into a consistent line up and our players will have been tested under all situations," said DeVos. "They will have traveled and played at home and be ready to compete against any and all A-10 schools."
Charlotte will visit La Salle for its last regular season game on May 4, followed by the A-10 Tournament on May 8-11 in Amherst, Mass.
