HALTON ARENA - Charlotte 49ers head coach Alan Major announced the 49ers non-conference men's basketball schedule for the 2012-13 season. The 14-game non-conference slate is highlighted by seven games in Halton Arena, one game in Time-Warner Cable Arena and at least six games against 2012 post-season teams. In addition the 49ers will make their first trip to the Great Alaska Shootout.
"The schedule is very challenging" said 49ers head coach Alan Major. "I am extremely excited that we have multiple home games in front of our tremendous fans. We have put together a challenging home and road schedule."
The home schedule features matchups with NCAA Tournament participants Lamar, Florida State and UNC Asheville. The road schedule features games against NCAA Tournament participant Davidson and ACC-foe and NIT participant Miami. Charlotte will play in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
"I'm excited about playing in the Great Alaska Shootout," Major added. "It is great to go on a long road trip as a team so that we can continue to grow closer together -- similar to our trip to the Bahamas a couple of weeks ago. We will face ACC Tournament Champions Florida State at Time Warner Cable Arena. It is exciting to play a game at Time Warner Cable Arena. It gives us access to more fans who live in Uptown Charlotte. A couple of years ago, when we played Tennessee at Time Warner Cable Arena we had a incredible fan support and we hope to have same atmosphere this year. We play Davidson again which is always a great rivalry game. We also play a future conference opponent when East Carolina comes to Halton Arena."
The season begins with three straight games in Halton Arena. The 49ers face Charleston Southern in their home opener, Friday, November 9. Since the 2000-01 season, the 49ers are 9-3 in home openers. The 49ers play Georgia Southern, Tuesday, November 13 and conclude their three-game season-opening home stand against NCAA Tournament participant Lamar, Saturday, November 17. Charlotte travels to the Great Alaska Shootout, November 22-24 where it will face Texas State in their first game, Thursday, November 22. The 49ers will face either NIT participant Oral Roberts or CollegeInsider.com Tournament participant Loyola Marymount, Friday, November 23. Charlotte will face either NCAA participant Belmont, UC Riverside, Northeastern or Alaska Anchorage in the final game of the Great Alaska Shootout, November 24. The 49ers first game of the Great Alaska Shootout will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network. The semifinals and championship games of the Great Alaska Shootout will also be shown on the CBS Sports Network. This will mark the first time that the 49ers have ever played in the Great Alaska Shootout.
The 49ers return to Halton Arena to face former and future conference foe East Carolina on Saturday, December 1. Charlotte defeated East Carolina, 76-64, on the road last December. The 49ers head across Mecklenburg County to face NCAA Tournament participant Davidson, Wednesday, December 5. The 49ers defeated Davidson, 84-61, at home last season. Just before Christmas, the 49ers will play defending ACC Tournament Champion Florida State at Time Warner Cable Arena, Saturday, December 22. The last time the 49ers played in Time Warner Cable Arena, Charlotte defeated #7 Tennessee, 49-48, December 17, 2010. The 49ers conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule when they play NCAA Tournament participant UNC Asheville in Halton Arena, Wednesday, January 2.
