Charlotte baseball welcomed 13 newcomers to go along with 21 returning players to the start of fall practice on campus. New to the team this year will be the use of the Judy W. Rose Football Center and weight room, athletic training and academic centers housed within that building, conveniently close to the Wells Fargo Field House, where the baseball locker room and coaches offices are located.
Those facilities surround Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium, where the 49ers have won nearly three-quarters of their games, 72.2 percent to be exact, since the facility opened on March 31, 2007. It will be the home of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championships on May 22-25, Charlotte's last foray into A-10 competition before changing leagues with the school for the 2014 campaign.
Also new to the team this year is new volunteer assistant and 1998 All-American Bo Robinson, who hit school-record totals of 100 RBI and 32 doubles that season to help Charlotte get an at-large bid into the then-48-team NCAA Tournament field. Robinson is one of now five 49ers to win a batting title, which he did in Conference USA that season with a .424 average.
The team is going through the strength and conditioning phase with Assistant Football Strength Coach Donny Smith, and the team phase of the fall will begin in a few weeks, culminating with the Niner World Series, which is slated to begin on October 25. More information on that series will be released at a later time.
The start of the season is slated for Friday, February 15, when the Niners host Delaware State for a weekend series.
NOTES: First baseman and pitcher Corbin Shive is recovering from successful "Tommy John" surgery and will not play this upcoming season. He will redshirt and play his senior season in 2014. Junior left-handed pitcher Micah Bryan has decided to leave to the team to try his hand at football with Charlotte.
