CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Sophomore Sara Trexler tallied her second
game winner in as many matches and junior goalkeeper Alex Kubrick only needed
one save to preserve the shutout in the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer 1-0
victory Friday over Western Carolina in the home opener at Transamerica Field.
"It was very important to keep the winning momentum going," head coach John Cullen said. "It is always nice to start off with another victory, in front of your own fans. They pulled us through tonight, at times, I thought. We were a little off the pace, but we'll take the W."
The win, the Niners' second in the young season, improved the program's all-time home-opening record to 14-5 with triumphs of six in the last seven years.
Trexler scored the game's lone goal at 15:57 when she played a give-and-go with senior Carrie Dail along the right side. Dail received the initial pass and raced to the right side of the 18-yard box before sprinting towards the end line. She then sent a cross back to the top of the six-yard box, locating a wide-open Trexler, who redirected the pass into the open net behind Catamount keeper Katie Jacobs.
Both teams had chances throughout the game to find the back of the net on other chances, but neither was able to break through. Sophomore Charlotte (2-0) midfielder Amanda Jones hit the crossbar on a shot in the 13th minute from 20 yards out.
Western Carolina (0-2) challenged with a pair of Christine Kaznowski attempts late in the first period but did not prevail.
Jones paced all players with four shots, one more than Trexler's total to guide the 49ers. In addition to Kaznowski's two shots, Kimberly Sullivan and Kelly Pannell each had a couple apiece.
Charlotte will return to action when it plays host to No. 5/7 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Demon Deacons, who lost to UNC Greensboro 1-0 Friday night, come to town as the highest ranked opponent to play at Transamerica Field.
