Former Charlotte track and field/cross country standout Christina Hobbs has been selected to attend Officer Candidates School (OCS) for the United States Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.
Hobbs, who proved that she knows all about dedication as a four year member of the 49ers track and field program, will enter the program in October. Before graduating from Charlotte in 2011, Hobbs etched her named in the record books as she was a member of the 4X800-meter relay team that won the Atlantic 10 Championships back in 2009. She also holds several top ten times in the middle and distance events for the women's track and field program.
"My top reason for attempting to be an Officer in the United States Marine Corps is first and foremost, to serve my country," Hobbs said. "Whether it is serving older adults by working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or serving my country in the Armed Forces, I believe service to others is one of the most important things an individual can do to give back to their community and nation."
Hobbs knows that the road to OCS will be no easy task but she's more than ready to embrace and conquer the challenges that lie ahead.
"I'm really excited about being chosen since the Marine Corps are very selective of the individuals they choose to attend OCS," Hobbs said. "Pursuing the route of Officer in the Marine Corps is usually about a six month process, so it gives you plenty of time to determine if this is a challenge you are willing to accept and, hopefully allowed to accept."
Hobbs credits her training as a Charlotte 49er for her commitment and desire to excel in OCS. At Charlotte, Hobbs was coached by Ed Schlichter who had the opportunity to get a first-hand tour of OCS this summer. While in Quantico, Schlichter participated in the OCS Educators Workshop that included a simulation squadron exercise, a ride on a Marine HMX-1 helicopter, a tour of the Marine Corps University, and a panel discussion about the OCS program.
"This was such a great experience for me," Schlichter said. "I have family that has served in the military and it really opened my eyes to one of our nation's biggest assets which is the Marine Core. When Christina told me she was entering the program I instantly knew she was a perfect candidate. She's a leader with a great personality and will make a substantial impact to the Marines."
After going through a rigorous process that included an initial interview, an extensive application, and a physical fitness test, Hobbs finally made the decision that would impact her life forever.
"While being selected is a major accomplishment, the real challenge starts once you actually get to OCS," Hobbs explained. "So until then, I'm just going to continue to train hard, stay focused, and see how things go once I get there in October."
