It dates back to 1885. A championship brings with it invitations to next month's British Open and next year's Master's and US Open. Past champions include Sergio Garcia (1998), Jose Maria Olazabal (1984) and the venerable Bobby Jones (1930).
Paul Ferrier (Edinburgh, Scotland), who completed his college career with the Charlotte 49ers this past spring, could join that historic list.
Ferrier has reached the semifinals of the 2012 British Amateur Championship at Royal Troon. The initial field of 288 has been reduced to the final four.
Ferrier defeated Australia's Matthew Stieger, 4&3 in the round of eight to advance to the semifinals, which are currently underway.
Ferrier advanced through stroke play into match play by shooting even par through the first two stroke play rounds at Royal Troon and Glasgow - Gailes Links.
Once in match play, Ferrier defeated Ben Stow, 7&6 in the round of 64. On Thursday, Ferrier toppled Denmark's Victor Henum, 4&3 in the round of 32 and holed a 35-foot oputt on the 19th holes to defeat Italy's Lorenzo Scotto in the round of 16.
A two-time all-Atlantic 10 choice, Ferrier led the 49ers to an at-large berth in the 2012 NCAA Tournament with a 73.14 stroke average. It was the 49ers school-record eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Ferrier graduated from the UNC Charlotte with a degree in psychology in May and thinks his college days are paying off.
"It's amazing how it (his major) all links to golf," Ferrier said. "It really taught me whether it's a 4-iron or a putt to win, it's all the same.
"Everything about my game has gotten that little bit better. I kind of grew up. I have a lot more belief in myself. When you're competing against the best players in college golf it can only make you better."
