The Charlotte men's tennis team was ranked No. 10 in the Carolinas Region season-ending poll, posted June 6. The Campbell's / Intercollegiate Tennis Association assigns the regional committees to rank the top ten teams in each of the 12 regions at the end of the fall tournament and spring dual match seasons.
The regional committee ranks the top 10 or 15 teams, plus 20 singles performers and 10 doubles pairings in the region. The regions were realigned several years ago to reflect geography rather than conference affiliation. The 49ers finished 6-6 against regional opponents (schools in North or South Carolina), with four of those losses coming against teams ranked ahead in the Carolinas Region Top 10.
"It's a compliment to our program that we were recognized as one of the top teams in the Carolinas Region," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "I'm happy for our players and very proud of their efforts this past year. We are headed in the right direction, but need to keep working hard if we want to realize our best tennis."
Charlotte has been previously ranked in a regional poll, taking a No. 11 ranking in the Region II poll at the end of the 2001, after a No. 12 ranking in the Region II poll after the 2000 season and a No. 15 ranking in Region II after 1999.
The program has registered national rankings by the ITA, as high as No. 62 in 2002, No. 62 in 2000 and No. 52 in 2000 season, with the team finishing at No. 57. Individually, the 49ers placed Roy Sichel in the rankings, going as high at No. 79. He was the first player to ever complete in the NCAA singles tournament.
This season, the 49ers placed a school-record four student-athletes on the All-Conference teams, eclipsing the 2007 season when three men were named to the All-A-10 teams. The 49ers graduated just one player from the nine-man roster, with five freshmen totaling 81 of the team's 112 wins (.723 of the team's singles wins) and just over 60 percent of doubles victories.
This year, the men's and women's teams put together their third-best combined win percentage total in program history, logging a .689 win percentage, with the fourth-most combined win total, with 31. The men put together a 15-8 season, including a 4-0 regular season mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The men captured the top seed in the A-10 Tournament, the second time in school history they entered as the top seed. Four of the team's eight season losses came against nationally-ranked opponents
