Senior track and field standouts Jason Roberts and Macey Ruble have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District III team, a selection committee announced Thursday. This marks the first such honor of Roberts' career, while Ruble was also selected during the 2010 season.
Roberts, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., is a six-time all-conference thrower for the 49ers. He ranks in the top-five in school history in five different events, including second all-time in the outdoor hammer and indoor weight throw. The Southwest Guilford High School graduate was the Atlantic 10's 2009 Outdoor Field Performer of the Year. Also that year, he was named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar List Second Team.
The throwing standout capped off an outstanding collegiate career this past week, with his final competition coming at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary. Earlier in May, Roberts was runner-up in the shot put and hammer and third in the discus at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Track & Field Outdoor Championships, helping the 49ers men win their fifth conference championship since joining the league in 2006. During the indoor season, he was also runner-up in the shot put, leading the Niners to a second place team finish at the conference meet.
Having earned a Bachelor's in Accounting last spring, Roberts is now working towards his Masters of Accountancy and boasts an impressive 4.0 GPA. He is a three-time Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Ruble, a senior from Boone, N.C., is a four-year standout in the pole vault. His best season with the 49ers came during 2010, where he finished runner-up in the event at the indoor conference championship and was later named CoSIDA Academic All-District III. This season, the Watauga High School graduate tied his career-best mark in the pole vault, clearing 14'3.25 at the Liberty Open.
A physics/mathematics double major, Ruble has also posted a 4.0 GPA during his time at Charlotte. He received his first career Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference nod earlier this spring. An outstanding student, Ruble is also the recipient of the 2011 Provost Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award and the 2012 Atlantic 10 Post-Graduate Scholarship.
