Pinch hitter Michael Grieco lifted a three-run homer to left as part of a five-run ninth to power a St. Bonaventure comeback win, 6-3 over host Charlotte in game two of an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball doubleheader Friday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The win gives the Bonnies the twinbill sweep, pushing its record to 23-24 overall, 10-13 in the A-10. Charlotte slips to 20-32, 8-14 in league play.
The 49ers struck gold first in game two, with a run on a pair of two-out hits in the first. Redshirt senior outfielder Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) singled on the infield and junior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) doubled for the RBI. He leads the team with 45 runs driven in this season, a top-five league tally.
Charlotte scored an unearned run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead, with freshman outfielder Leland Clemmons (Chesapeake, Va. / Portsmouth Christian HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the RBI in that frame.
The Bonnies got one run back in the sixth after a leadoff single by second baseman Jason Radwan turned into a run on a bloop single down the right field line with two outs from right fielder Ryan Skellie, with Radwan running on contact from second for the score.
Charlotte starter Joe Yermal (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh HS) retired nine in a row at one point before the run scored against him in that sixth inning.
The 49ers added their third run in the seventh with back-to-back singles with two outs. Clemmons hit one through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Brown collected his second hit, out to left, to drive in the run.
Yermal lasted eight innings and was lifted after allowing a double to start the ninth with a 3-1 lead. In eight innings, he allowed just six hits and two walks, tying a season high with five strikeouts. With the no-decision, he ends his career with 30 wins, second-most in school history. SBU collected three more hits in the frame after his departure, including the Grieco blast to put the Bonnies on top in the ninth.
The loss was charged to reliever John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio), who was tagged for four runs in a third of an inning, on two hits and a walk.
SBU's Eddie Gray earned a complete-game victory (4-3), tossing 124 pitches to get the win. He scattered seven hits and four walks in his outing, giving up two earned runs with five strikeouts.
Bonnies Radwan and Skellie, along with Charlotte's Brown, had two hits each to tie for the game-high lead.
The two teams will complete the series at 2 p.m. Saturday. Charlotte will honor its eight outgoing seniors in a pregame ceremony.
NOTES: Charlotte's Corbin Shive, Justin Roland and Brown all kept their streak of reaching base safely alive in the double header... Shive drew walks in both games to push his league-leading total to 36 games, while Roland collected hits in both games for 28 in a row and Brown had walks in the first and hits in the second to push his streak to 26 straight... Charlotte has four blown saves in its last seven games, after only giving up two save opportunities all season... The 49ers are looking for their first win in May tomorrow.
