Sophomore Joann Blakney is expected to lead the way for the 49ers, having qualified for a team-high four events. The Charlotte native ran qualifying times in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay, and is ranked 25th in the 100m and 38th in the 200m heading into the East Prelim. This season, she captured a trio of Atlantic 10 titles at the outdoor conference championship. In her first year as a 49er, Blakney already ranks in the top-five in school history in multiple event categories.
Competing alongside Blakney in the women's relay events are sophomores LaTrese Barker and Briauna Jones and senior Sirrell Butler, who will accompany her in the 4x100m relay. Rookies LeAnna Morrison, T'Sheila Mungo and Jaleah Wilder will serve as Blakney's teammates in the 4x400m relay. Morrison will also compete in the 400m hurdles, while Mungo will run the 400m.
Also on the women's side, junior Maraya Slatter will run in the 800m, having qualified for the event with a PR of 2:06.51 at this past weekend's Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier. Senior Amanda Goetschius will also compete at the distance level. A former NCAA All-American and multiple conference champion, Goetschius will run the 10,000m.
Sophomore Katrina Wright wraps up the list of female competitors. The Charlotte school record holder in the discus and top-five competitor in the shot put and hammer, Wright will compete in the discus.
On the men's side, three 49ers will compete in track events, while the other four will perform on the field side. School record holder Cordell Livingston will run the 400m hurdles, and is seeded 27th in the event. Classmate Isaac McReynolds, another school record holder, will compete in the 110m hurdles as the 18th seed. Freshman Khyran Shank, who holds the third-best time in school history in the 200m, is slated to run the event.
Four strong field performers have also punched their tickets to the NCAA First Round. Senior Jason Roberts, a six-time all-conference performer and former Atlantic 10 Field Performer of the Year, will participate in the hammer. Classmate Jake Wainwright, the 2012 A10 Indoor Field Performer of the Year and indoor/outdoor conference champion in the long jump, will compete in that event. Junior transfer Kerrick Williams is the 21st seed in the discus throw, while rookie Trey McRae wraps up the men's competitors with a spot in the high jump.
