A team-leading seventh home run of the season by first baseman Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) got Charlotte on the scoreboard, but a 13-run first inning by Wake Forest doomed the 49ers out of the gates in an 18-2 road loss at the Wake Forest Baseball Park Tuesday night. The game was non-conference finale for the 49ers, as they slip to 20-30 on the season. Wake improves to 29-22 as the two teams head into their final conference series this weekend.
The Demon Deacons drew six walks and had 10 hits in the opening frame, which included two home runs and five RBI from right fielder Mac Williamson in that inning. Leadoff hitter Pat Blair batted three times in the inning, with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single and two outs in the inning against three different pitchers.
Shive homered to lead off the fifth, while third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) singled to drive in shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) after he walked in the sixth. The RBI from Basen was his team-leading 44th of the season.
WFU added three runs in the seventh and a pair in the eighth to finish off the scoring.
Each team sent eight different pitchers to the mound in the contest.
Both starters got decisions, with Wake's Chris Willson improving to 3-1 after tossing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and recording four strikeouts.
Charlotte's Chad Rothlin (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) got the first batter out, but walked four and gave up four runs on one hit, the first of the two Williamson homers, for his third loss of the season (3-3).
Reliever Wes Hatley had his best outing of the season, pitching a season-high 4.1 innings without a allowing a run. He gave up three hits and struck out a season-high four batters.
The 49ers finish the regular season with a three-game home series against Atlantic 10 Conference foe St. Bonaventure, starting Thursday night at 6 p.m. The 49ers will honor their seniors before Friday's contest, also slated for 6 p.m.
NOTES: Shive, Roland and outfielder Shane Brown all extended their streaks of reaching base safely... Shive is at 34 games, Roland at 26 and Brown is up to 24 games in a row... Shive has a career-best nine-game hit streak... Charlotte has not won any of the six games in which Shive has homered.
