Charlotte 49ers head women's tennis coach Michaela Gorman and assistant coach Jesse Tarr will participate in the 2012 Bosom Buddies Benefit Clinic this Tuesday at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club. Their appearance will benefit breast cancer research and awareness. Both will be among many local tennis professionals teaching clinics at 9 a.m. and again at 11 a.m.
Gorman will be working with participants on doubles strategy, whule Tarr will be teaching offensive and defensive strategies.
Tarr will also participate in a mixed doubles exhibition match during the instructional lunch break, at 10:30 at the club, which is adjacent to Quail Hollow.
Bosom Buddies started in 2005 at Weddington Swim and Raquet Club, beginning with 13 Charlotte-area tennis professionals using various dates at their clubs to conduct mini-clinics for various women to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The inaugural year's event raised over $7,000. In 2006, the event was held at two site, with 150 participants and 21 tennis pros, generating $10,400 for Komen for the Cure.
The event has continued to grow from three sites, 252 participants and 30 pros in 2007 to 10 sites, 101 pros and 818 participants in 2010, generating over $75,000 for awareness and research. Some of the monies raised have gone to Ann's Fund, a local breast cancer organization that provides mammograms to indigent women in the community.
Last season, despite weather issues, they generated $80,000, bringing their tally to nearly $300,000 for breast cancer research and awareness.
This is the fourth year in which Gorman has participated in teaching at the clinics.
"My mom is a breast cancer survivor and I got involved in this wonderful event because of her," said Gorman. "The clinic participants are women who are currently fighting the disease, or have survived it, or are just good supporters of the cause."
Tarr will be paired with Aaron Miller, the head coach at Belmont Abbey College. They will be playing Dennis Myers and Matt Kline.
Myers was the former 4A singles and doubles high school champion out of Charlotte before playing at N.C. State and UNC Wilmington. He is an instructor at the Charlotte Tennis Academy. Kline is the Head Tennis Professional at Foxcroft Hills Swim and Racquet Club, and the was former head coach at Belmont Abbey College.
