Just one week after taking home a pair of conference championships, the Charlotte 49ers track and field team hit the road again for multiple meets to begin winding down the outdoor season. Charlotte sent student-athletes to Clemson, NC State, North Carolina A&T and Georgia Tech over the weekend, and final results are in.
At the NC State Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier, junior Maraya Slatter punched her ticket to the NCAA First Round with a third place finish in the 800m run. Her time of 2:06.51 was a PR of nearly three seconds and was just behind Charlotte alum and volunteer coach Aja Jackson, who came in at 2:06.07. Slatter's mark was the second-fastest 800m time school history and the 26th fastest in the Southeast Region this season.
Other top performances at NC State included junior Maria Ruiz, who finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:46.85) with a new personal best, and senior Laura McCary, who placed third in the 5,000m (17:47.62). On the men's side, rookie Zach Greth ran a 14:56.95 in the 5,000m, while senior Dakota Lowery was runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase with a season-best time (9:05.47).
In the field events, Toby Jo Klauenberg was third in the women's shot put (13.08m), while Jason Roberts was third in the men's hammer (58.67m).
At Georgia Tech, junior pole vaulter Robert Wilson stood out on Friday night, tying the outdoor school record with a vault of 16'0.75 to finish 10th.
During Saturday's competition, a number of track athletes performed well. Sophomore standout Joann Blakney finished fourth in the 100m dash finals (11.57). Rookie T'Sheila Mungo took 11th in the 400m dash (54.81). Classmate LeAnna Morrison was 14th in the 400m hurdles (1:00.58). Lastly, the women's 4x100m relay, composed of LaTrese Barker, Blakney, Sirrell Butler, and Lauren Gulley, finished third in a time of 45.80.
At Clemson, just four Niners competed. Junior Kerrick Williams highlighted the group, winning the men's discus with a distance of 171'4. Freshman Mike Tamayo finished seventh in the 800m seeded run with a time of 1:53.70. Sophomore Toby Jo Klauenberg took fourth in the shot put (45'10.5), and classmate Katrina Wright finished sixth in the discus (137'1).
Up next for a select few 49ers will be the NCAA East Preliminary, which is slated to take place May 24-26th in Jacksonville, Fl.
