Opened in 1996, the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC)/Halton Arena contains the playing arena for the 49ers Mens and Womens Basketball and Volleyball Programs. The arena is a multiuse facility that regularly hosts concerts, exhibits and special events. Halton Arena is also the host for the Winter/Spring Commencement Ceremonies. Halton Arena is located centrally on the Charlotte campus.
In 2014, Halton Arena was selected as the 22nd best college basketball arena in the country by Stadium Journey Magazine.
In addition the facility includes full-size locker rooms (Volleyball, Womens Basketball, Mens Basketball), coaches offices, 49ers athletic department administrative offices, strength & conditioning weight room, full athletic training suite, academic center and the Charles Hayward Memorial Practice Gym.
Volleyball, Womens Basketball and Mens Basketball Student-Athletes enjoy comfortable locker rooms close to the Arena floor as well as all training centers.
The Dr. David S. Johnston Sports Medicine Athletic Training Room is on the Arena floor level adjacent to the basketball and volleyball locker rooms. The training room affords the 49ers student-athletes the very best care possible with regard to athletic-related injuries.
The Charles Hayward Memorial Practice Court is located on the ground level of Halton Arena and reserved for Charlotte 49ers Student-Athletes only. The Volleyball, Mens and Womens Basketball teams regularly hold practice sessions in the facility. Strength & Conditioning also utilizes the space for training.
The Student Activity Center houses the 49ers Academic Center. Computers, study pods and a quiet atmosphere allow student-athletes the proper environment to succeed in the classroom. Academic Advisors offices are also located in the academic center.
Halton Arena provides fans one of the best gameday atmospheres around. Regularly packing the arena, the 49ers continue to update amenities around the facility. In recent years the 49ers have added a state-of-the-art sound system, center-hung video board updates and auxiliary pro-table scoreboards that line the court to add the entire Halton Arena experience.
Hospitality Salons used for various university functions including the 49ers Club Men's Basketball Pregame and halftime receptions are located on the third floor adjacent to the Athletic Administration Offices.
SAC/Halton Arena is the primary home for Charlotte 49ers Administrative Athletics Staff.
Connected to the Barnhart Student-Activity Center is the clock tower. At the base of the clock tower is the 49ers athletic ticket office. The ticket office is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday-Friday as well as for every athletic and university ticketed event in Halton Arena.
