NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three Charlotte softball players have earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, the league announced Wednesday. Junior Briana Gwaltney was named to the First Team, while freshmen Alex Rogers and Lexi Betancourt garnered All-Rookie recognition.
Gwaltney, a junior from Anaheim Hills, Calif., has started all 52 games for the 49ers at left field. She leads the team with a .317 batting average, and is also tops on the squad in hits (51), runs scored (39), home runs (14), RBI (40), total bases (103) and slugging percentage (.640). In addition, she is tied for second on the team in doubles (8), triples (1) and walks (27). Her home run total has helped shatter the school record for homers in a season and career.
The Atlantic 10 leader in home runs and total bases, Gwaltney is tied for first in the conference in RBIs and second in slugging percentage. She also ranks 30th nationally in home runs on the season. This is the second First Team All-Conference honor of Gwaltney's career. She also earned All-Rookie honors as a freshman.
Rogers, a freshman from Lutz, Fl., has been an anchor in the outfield for the 49ers all season at center field. Through 52 starts, she leads the squad in walks (39) triples (2), stolen bases (5-5) and on base percentage (.451). Rogers ranks second on the team behind Gwaltney in batting average (.310), hits (48), and runs scored (32).
In her first year in a 49er uniform, Rogers has broken the Charlotte single-season record for walks drawn, shattering Gwaltney's previous record of 30. She leads the conference in that category and ranks 38th in the NCAA. Rogers is also third in the A10 in on base percentage.
Betancourt, a freshman from Garner, N.C., has been a key member of the 49ers pitching staff. The right hander leads the way with a 15-12 record in 33 appearances, with a 2.84 ERA, 20 complete games and three shutouts. Through 187.1 innings, she has allowed 76 earned runs with 117 strikeouts and 53 walks. Betancourt has held opponents to a .266 batting average.
Betancourt ranks fourth in the conference in wins, behind Atlantic 10 aces Jen Mineau (Fordham) and Sara Plourde (UMass), both of whom were named First Team All-Conference. She is also fourth in the A10 in innings pitched and fifth in strikeouts.
All three players helped Charlotte to a 28-24 record and 10-10 mark in the Atlantic 10. With that, the Niners have earned their seventh straight bid to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday in St. Louis. The five-seed 49ers will take on four-seed George Washington in the opening round of the tournament at 2 p.m. EST.
