Charlotte started a late weekend series at Georgia Tech and generated eight hits, but the Yellow Jackets recorded just the second shutout of the 49ers this year in a 9-0 victory at Russ Chandler Stadium. The 49ers slip to 20-24 on the year, snapping a three-game win streak. Tech improved to 27-19.
Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) collected two hits, the only multi-hit day for Charlotte, and increased his streak to 20 games in a row reaching base safely. With a single in the second, his high school teammate Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C.) improved his streak of reaching base safely to 28 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Neither team could score in the first two innings, but the Yellow Jackets put up three in the third inning, all with two outs, reaching on back-to-back walks and recording three infield hits and a hit batter to take the 3-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the fourth on two hits and a walk, but broke the game open with five runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter in the sixth inning for the 9-0 margin.
Designated hitter Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) hit a double in the top of the sixth with two outs to put runners at second and third, but Charlotte left them on base. Brown has a 12-game hit streak still going, the longest active streak on the team. The 49ers left seven on base in the contest.
GT starter Buck Farmer got the win after seven shutout innings, giving up eight hits and a walk in 118 pitches.
Charlotte starter Andrew Smith (Matthews, N.C. / Butler HS) allowed five runs in 5.1 innings, on six hits and four walks and took the loss, to drop to 5-7.
The two teams will complete the series in a scheduled Sunday doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.
