Charlotte men's tennis won its third conference match in as many tries with a 7-0 sweep of Fordham Friday morning at George Washington's Mt. Vernon Tennis Complex. The 49ers are 13-6 on the season, a perfect 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Rams fall to 14-7, 2-3 in the A-10 to this point.
"This was a team effort today," said 49ers head coach Billy Boykin. "Our guys played hard and Fordham fought us the whole way. They're a tough team and have played very good tennis all year. We will try to take this momentum into tomorrow's match with George Washington."
The 49ers took two of three doubles matches to score the first team point.
Charlotte's number-three pair of freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz (Wroclaw, Poland) won 8-3 to improve to 6-4 together.
Charlotte swept the singles results, with Khalil and freshman Paul Cisti (Arcachon, France) winning in straight sets at numbers two and four, respectively. The remainder of the singles wins came in three-set marathons. Khalil is now 12-1 on the season, winning 12 in a row in singles. Cisti won his second straight singles match, and evened his season mark to 15-15.
Williams won at number one, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to move to 15-12, with an 11-8 mark in dual matches at the top singles spot in the lineup.
Calott took a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win at number three to win his 16th singles match of the year, tied with freshman Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla.), who won at number six 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 for his 16th singles win.
Charlotte's lone senior, Anthony Davison (Derby, England) dropped his opening set 4-6, before rallying 6-1, 7-5 to take the win and a 13-12 record.
The win was Charlotte's second straight. The 49ers finish conference play for the regular season with a noon match Saturday against the host Colonials at George Washington.
