CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Members of the Charlotte 49ers cross country team were some of over 200 volunteers who donated their time at the NC Half Marathon this past Sunday. The event, which took place entirely inside the Charlotte Motor Speedway, featured a half marathon and a 5K race where runners could run on the speedway itself, the inside cart track orthe drag strip. Over 2,700 runners participated in the inaugural event.

"I was extremely proud of my cross country team for getting up before 6 a.m. on a Sunday and dedicating their morning to handing out water and helping direct the 2,700 runners that participated," said cross country coach Ed Schlichter. "It was a great team building exercise as we were coming up with the best system to fill the cups and get them to the runners."

The 49ers were split up and assigned to various water stations throughout the course, where they handed out cups to runners passing by. Other members of the team were given the task of course marshal.

"We produce events across the nation and one of the most challenging areas for us has always been to ensure that we have good volunteer coverage for the events," said race director Gaby Pozo. "The NC Half Marathon had some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable volunteers we have worked with in a long time. They came out to support the event and assure an amazing experience for all the runners."

Schlichter and the rest of the cross country squad look forward to maintaining a relationship with the NC Half Marathon for years to come.
