Charlotte men's tennis needed a late win from lone senior Anthony Davison (Derby, England) in his last home collegiate match for the 49ers to pull out a 4-3 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The 49ers snap a two-match losing skid and improve to 12-6 on the season, dropping the Mountaineers to a 6-5 mark.
"This was a great college tennis match," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "Appalachian State is an experienced and talented team and can beat you in a number of different ways. They came out of the gates firing and took a hard-fought doubles point. From there it was really back and forth the rest of the way. We faced deficits in every match, but the guys kept plugging. I credit our kids, all of them, for fighting hard until the end. This was a great team win for us."
The Mountaineers took the doubles point by winning a pair of matches. Charlotte's lone doubles win came at number-three. Junior Krzysztof Kwasniewicz (Wroclaw, Poland) and freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) took an 8-6 victory to push their record to 5-4 on the season.
The 49ers won four singles matches to secure the team victory. Freshman Paul Cisti (Arcachon, France) won first in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 before classmate Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) won after winning a first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (4), 6-0. Cisti is 14-15 this season, while Shanok got into a tie for the team lead with his 15th singles victory (15-11) of the season.
Khalil won at number two for his team-best 11th-straight victory, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Davison won in his third set when his opponent, Steve Karendal, was forced to retire with Davison leading 4-1. Davison got his season singles record to 12-12.
"It would be hard to script a better scenario for Anthony's Senior Day," added Boykin. "With the match score knotted at 3-3, Anthony delivered an intrepid performance in the third set to clinch the match for our team. I couldn't be happier for Ant. He's such a good guy and has been a terrific leader for us on and off the court all year. We're all happy for him."
The 49ers finish out the season with a pair of matches in Washington, D.C., before a season-ending match at Radford. Friday, Charlotte plays Fordham in a neutral-site match before a Saturday noon match at George Washington.
