After dropping a 4-3 decision at home Thursday, the Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team found itself on the positive side of a 4-3 victory Saturday at the Earle Tennis Center over The Citadel. The win pushes Charlotte's record to 11-4, while the Bulldogs have dropped five in a row and slip to 4-7. The 49ers have won their last two road matches.
"We squeaked out a tough one today against a hungry Citadel team," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "I am proud of the guys for the tenacity and focus they showed under pressure. After we came out on the wrong end of one of these a few days ago, it's really nice to see the kids respond with such gutsy play and fight. These guys are a competitive group."
Charlotte captured the doubles point, which proved crucial to the team victory. Charlotte's top two pairs claimed victory for the team. The top pair of freshmen Jack Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Alex Calott (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) won 8-5, while the number-two pairing of junior Krzysztof Kwasniewicz (Wroclaw, Poland) and freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) started the winning with an 8-2 victory. Williams and Calott lead Charlotte with seven wins together, but Kwasniewicz and Khalilhave won four in a row playing together.
In singles play, Khalil took a straight-sets win at number two, Calott did that same at number three and freshman Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) won 6-3, 6-2 at number six.
Khalil is Charlotte's hottest singles performer, winning his last nine matches to post a 9-1 mark. Calott and Shanok are tied for the team lead with 14 wins, with Shanok taking four-straight wins in singles play.
The 49ers stay in Charleston with a match Sunday against College of Charleston at 11 a.m.
