Charlotte and East Carolina played a tight match which came down to the wire, but the visiting Pirates took down the host 49ers 4-3 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon. Both programs are now 10-4 on the season.
Charlotte had a three-match win streak snapped and lost its first home match of the season (6-1). The Pirates grab their second straight road win after grabbing their first road victory of the season Tuesday at the Citadel.
"It's always tough to come out on the losing end of a 4-3 score," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "I have to give credit to ECU's guys, they played better tennis than we did on the big points today. We fought hard at every spot, but failed to convert at the critical stages in a few key matches. We'll take some things away from this match and hit the practice courts tomorrow to get ready for the weekend."
The Pirates captured the doubles point when taking a 9-7 win at number three after the two teams exchanged victories. ECU took the number-one matchup 8-5, while junior Krzysztof Kwasniewicz (Wroclaw, Poland) and freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) won for the third straight time playing together and captured victory at number two 8-4 to knot up the doubles point.
In singles, Charlotte won at number two, number five and number six for three points, but could not get over the hump for one more win and the team victory.
Khalil was the winner at number two in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-4. He has won eight-straight singles matches, and is 8-1 on the season.
Senior Anthony Davison (Derby, England) and freshman Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) won in straight sets at five and six, respectively. Shanok is tied for the team lead with 13 singles victories, while Davison improved to 7-2 at number five in dual matches, 11-9 overall for the season.
The 49ers head to Charleston for a pair of matches over the weekend. Saturday, Charlotte takes on The Citadel at noon. Sunday, the Niners face College of Charleston at 11 a.m.
