Charlotte men's tennis rallied to win five of the six singles matches to take a home match Thursday against cross-town rival Davidson 5-2 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The win for the 49ers is the third so far this season against a team that beat them last year, and improves Charlotte's record to 7-2. Davidson drops to 3-4.
"This young group has energy," said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "We need to focus on our execution, especially in doubles and the second sets of our singles matches, but I give a lot of credit to our fight today. It's hard to win five singles matches. Kamil Khalil was outstanding today, as was Jack Williams. We managed to play well when it counted. Davidson also fought hard today and gave us a great match. I'm glad we don't play them again this season."
Davidson swept the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 team lead, but the 49ers made quick work in the sixth and fourth spots, with freshmen Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) and Paul Cisti (Arcachon, France) winning in straight sets.
Fellow freshman Jack Williams (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alpharetta HS) needed a first-set tiebreaker to go his way before winning in 6-2 in the second for the third point of the match for the 49ers.
Shanok and Williams both got to double-digit singles wins in their freshman campaigns, while Cisto is to nine wins this season.
Matches two, three and five all came down to third sets, with the Niners taking two of the three in the win.
Freshman Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) clinched the match for Charlotte at number three, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 for his third singles win in four matches this season.
Icing the cake was senior Anthony Davison (Derby, England), who won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in a gritty performance for the final result of the day. Both he and Khalil have won three in a row on the singles side.
Charlotte has won nearly 70 percent (37 of 53) singles results in nine dual matches this season.
The 49ers will hit the road for their next four matches, starting at No. 48 South Carolina this Saturday at 4 p.m.
