Charlotte, NC - Four 49ers scored in double-figures led by Jennifer Hailey's career-high 27 points but it was not enough as Charlotte (15-11, A-10: 7-5) lost to Saint Joseph's (18-8, A-10: 8-4), 85-73, in Halton Arena on the 49ers' Play 4Kay game. The 49ers fans and players were encouraged to wear pink to the game to show support for College Women's Basketball's fight against Breast Cancer.
"We had a tough stretch late in the second half where we had some defensive breakdowns," Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra said. "We made critical defensive mistakes during that stretch and Saint Joseph's is too good of a team to have defensive breakdowns against. However, the season is not over; we just need to continue to fight and get better."
Hailey scored 17 of her 27 points in the first half. Hailey has now scored 910 career points. Epiphany Woodson scored 18 points with 10 of those points coming in the first half. She connected on three three-point field goals and dished out seven assists in the game. Jai Forney scored 10 points and dished out seven assists. Amanda Dowe scored 10 points in the game.
The 49ers behind the scoring of Dowe and Hailey enjoyed a 40-28 advantage on points in the paint.
Saint Joseph's lead for a majority of the first half however it was by only three or four points. Then, Hailey scored inside giving the 49ers their first lead of the game, 23-22, with 5:06 on the clock. The lead exchanged hands several times with several ties over the final five minutes. Then, Charlotte's Olivia Rankin connected on a short jump shot with eight seconds left in the half which gave the 49ers a 35-33 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, Charlotte behind a jump shot by Woodson pushed their lead to 45-40 with 16:59 on the clock which was Charlotte's largest lead. Saint Joseph's scored 10 of the next 13 points taking a 50-48 lead with 14:20 on the clock.
Woodson connected on a three pushing the 49ers back in front 51-50 with 13:09 on the clock. The lead exchanged hands several times over the next four minutes. Dowe gave the 49ers their final lead, 58-57, when she connected on a layup at the 9:39 mark.
Saint Joseph's took control of the game with a 12-2 run over the next two and half minutes taking a 69-60 lead. Hailey converted on a three-point play cutting Saint Joseph's lead to 71-66, with 5:18 on the clock. However, that would be as close as the 49ers would get to Saint Joseph's the rest of the way.
