The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's cross country teams have been recognized as 2011 Division I All‐Academic, the USTFCCCA announced Wednesday. A total of 147 institutions representing 30 conferences earned the honor on the men's side, while 205 schools from 30 conferences were recognized on the women's side. The Niners, led by third-year coach Ed Schlichter, posted a men's team GPA of 3.14 and a women's GPA of 3.36 for the fall.
The 49ers concluded their season at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, Ky. this past November. On the women's side, senior Amanda Goetschius paced the Niners with an 12th place effort that earned her all-region honors. Junior Hana Sutchar was second, finishing just shy of an all-region performance at 32nd place. Rookies Jenna Christensen, Jen Molke and senior Aurora Trujillo rounded out the top five scorers. The Niners women also turned in a third place finish at this year's Atlantic 10 Championship, which Charlotte hosted.
Junior Daweet Dagnachew led the men's team throughout the season, turning in a top-100 performance at the Southeast Regional with a time of 32:25 in the 10K race. Freshman Zach Greth, juniors Ross Roberson and Cody Hodgins, and fifth-year senior Dakota Lowery rounded out the top five group of performers at regionals. The Niners finished ninth as a team at the A10 Championship.
Chattanooga reported the highest cumulative men's team GPA in the country through the fall 2011 semester at 3.81. Creighton followed at 3.72. Seven of the top ten finishing teams at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All‐Academic status. Of the 31 teams that participated in the national meet, 20 of those earned All‐Academic status.
On the women's side, Alabama reported the nation's highest cumulative team GPA (3.83), followed by Southern Miss (3.80). Nine of the top ten finishing teams at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 31 teams that participated in the national final, 26 were All-Academic.
Altogether, 13 Atlantic 10 cross country programs earned the honor.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All‐Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
