Charlotte, NC- Charlotte 49ers senior midfielder Evan James was selected with the first pick of Major League Soccer's Supplemental Draft by the expansion Montreal Impact. James is from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
"Evan is a young Canadian player who we followed in college and who we felt did well in the Combine," said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch. "We had him rated higher than a third round pick and are very happy to add him to the group and help move him along."
This past season, James played a major role in helping the 49ers reach the College Cup Championship game for the first time in school history.
James, who earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, led the 49ers in assists with seven. He has scored five goals to rank second on the team in goals. He scored the game's first goal just 43 seconds into the match in Charlotte's 3-1 second round NCAA Tournament victory at UAB. Last season, James was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week twice as well as to TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week.
"I'm so honored and so grateful for this opportunity to fulfill my dreams," James said. "Thank you to the whole Charlotte 49ers family for helping me get to this point in my career."
James finished his career ranked 12th in school history with 63 career points. He finished 13th in the program's history with 22 career goals. He finished 14th in school history with 19 career assists.
