CHARLOTTE, N.C. - On Macky Wingo's sixth goal of the season, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team topped the Fordham Rams, 1-0 in conference play on Sunday at Transamerica Field. With the victory, the Niners improve to 6-8-4 overall and stay competitive in the Atlantic 10 at 3-3-1. The Rams fall to 8-8-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in the conference.
"It was a big win on Senior Day," head coach John Cullen said following the game. "We needed it. It's special to send the seniors out in their last game here at Transamerica Field with a W, a clean sheet and an important win. There's no better way to end your season at home than with a win on Senior Day in front of your fans."
Wingo's goal in the 55th minute put the 49ers ahead 1-0. The play started when Jonna Handra sent a free kick opportunity downfield to freshman Amanda Jones, who subbed in to start the second half, her first appearance since being sidelined weeks earlier with an injury. Jones sent a nice ball in front of the goal, where it was deflected by a Rams defender to Macky, who put it away.
"I'm pleased that Macky Wingo got the winning goal," Cullen said. "It's just a reward for the work that she's put in and that the seniors have put in."
The Rams defense limited the number of shots Charlotte was able to take, but the Niners made their opportunities count. Sarah Ann Waugh and Jonna Handra had the first and only two shots on goal in the first half for the 49ers, coming in the sixth and eighth minutes.
Jones had a nice attempt to open the second half, a high shot that sailed over the crossbar.
Sophomore Dakota Olson rocketed a shot in the 78th minute that almost put the Niners up by another goal, but Rams keeper Rachel Suther was able to corral it for the save.
Fordham held a 22-9 advantage in the match. Wingo led the Niners' offense with three shots on the day, including the goal. Annie Worden led the Rams with five shots, while Kristina Maksuti and Liz Ker had four apiece. Charlotte had a 5-3 edge in corners.
In goal, senior keeper Natalie LaVigne earned her second clean sheet of the season, making six saves in the effort for her second victory on the year. Suther made three stops in net for the Rams.
"Every game is getting bigger and bigger," Cullen said. "We've got two more next weekend and they're even more monumental."
Charlotte plays its final two regular season games on the road next weekend. The 49ers face Xavier Friday at 7 p.m. and Dayton Sunday at 1 p.m. for the regular season finale.
