ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Despite playing on the road and in extremely poor field conditions, the Charlotte 49ers women's soccer team was able to come away with a tie at St. Bonaventure in Atlantic 10 play on Friday afternoon. With the draw, the Niners move to 4-7-4 overall and 1-2-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Bonnies are now 6-5-3 and 1-1-2 in conference play.
"I'm really proud of the girls for the way we battled, despite playing in awful conditions today," head coach John Cullen said after the game. "The pitch was so slick and muddy that it really came down to who would make a mistake first. In tough conditions, we found a way to get a tie on the road, which is always tough in conference play as it is, so I'm proud of our team."
Handra's goal, a penalty kick marker in the 29th minute, gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead. After being fouled in the box, the senior forward converted the penalty kick, putting the ball in the back left corner of the net.
The Bonnies tied it up in the 41st minute when Molly Curry tapped in a right-footed shot for the equalizer. Janelle Taylor and Alicia Edwell were credited with assists on the play.
Immediately after the goal, rookie Sara Trexler put a shot on net that was saved by St. Bonaventure keeper Jennifer Andrews to keep it an even game, and the two teams went into the half tied 1-1.
Charlotte keeper Natalie LaVigne made two solid saves early in the second half to keep the Niners in it, stopping consecutive shots from Jordan Calabria and Curry.
In the 64th minute, Handra had a second scoring chance, but her try sailed high over the crossbar. Macky Wingo had the Niners' last opportunity to score in regulation, putting a shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but her attempt was saved by the Bonnies keeper.
The 49ers looked good heading into the first overtime, as Handra and Carrie Dail each recorded shots on goal to open the extra frame.
In the 92nd minute, LaVigne came through again, turning away a breakaway shot by Curry to keep her team alive on the road.
Brooke Mulloy took the final shot of the match, a wide attempt in the 110th minute, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
St. Bonaventure held a 21-14 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in corners in the match. Wingo led the Niners with five shots, including three on goal, while Handra had four tries.
LaVigne made six stops in net for the 49ers, while Andrews made six of her own for the Bonnies.
The 49ers continue their conference road trip on Sunday, facing Duquesne at 1 p.m.
