Charlotte, NC - The defending Atlantic-10 Champion Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team, who won 13 games, captured an 8-1 conference record and earned national rankings face a challenging schedule, including matchups against five NCAA tournament teams in 2011.
The 49ers schedule is highlighted by seven regular-season homes games as well as matchups against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina.
"These are some of the most prestigious programs in the nation," said Niners head coach, Jeremy Gunn. "Our goal here is to be one of the best programs in the nation and we challenge our players by setting up the most competitive schedule as possible."
The Niners, who return 10 starters and 21 letter winners, begin their 2011 season with exhibitions against Winthrop August 17, North Carolina August 21 and begin regular season play facing Coastal Carolina August 27.
In September, the Niners are set to face four NCAA tournament teams. Charlotte hosts UNC Wilmington September 4, will travel to take on longtime rival South Carolina September 6 and remain on the road with a game at Elon September 9. Returning to Transamerica Field, the Niners host UNC Greensboro September 11 before going back on the road to face Virginia September 16 and Clemson September 20. The 49ers will begin A-10 play on the road as they face Massachusetts October 7 and Rhode Island October 9. The Niners will host St. Bonaventure in their conference home-opener October 14 followed by a matchup against Duquesne October 16. Charlotte heads north to take on La Salle October 21 and Fordham October 30. The Niners round out conference play traveling to Saint Louis November 5. After a short trip back to Charlotte, the Niners will travel back to Saint Louis for the Atlantic 10 Tournament held November 10-13.
"Last year's squad played the best soccer we have seen at Charlotte," Gunn said. "We are hopeful to defend our A-10 regular season title and qualify for the NCAAs to enjoy a great postseason run. We are very confident it will be a special senior year for a great group."
