Senior second baseman Corey Shaylor (Charlotte, N.C. / Independence HS) hit his team-leading third home run of the season and drove in a game-high four runs as the No. 28 Charlotte 49ers cruised to an 8-1 home victory over North Carolina Central in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night. The 49ers improve to 29-8 on the season, winners of six straight games at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The game was played in front of 1,196 fans, giving the Niners their eighth sellout of the season. The Eagles had a two-game win streak halted and fell to 6-33.
Charlotte's first four hits were for extra bases and all drove in at least one run. Five of Charlotte's eight total hits were for extra bases.
The 49ers put up three runs in the third to start the scoring. After a pair of leadoff walks, Shaylor brought home his first pair of runs on a double down the left field line. He came around to score on a two-out double from Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS) off the left field fence.
In the third with two outs, senior outfielder Cory Tilton (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope HS) drew his second walk of the day before Shaylor's blast to left on a 3-1 pitch for the 5-0 Charlotte lead.
The 49ers put up two more runs in the fourth, the first coming on a ground ball double play and the second on a double to left from designated hitter Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS).
The Eagles scored an unearned run in the sixth to avoid the shutout. Edward Pegues had NCCU's only hit of the inning, with three Niners errors allowing an unearned run.
A double steal in the sixth garnered Charlotte its eighth run and final run of the day.
Charlotte starting pitcher Joe Yermal (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh HS) got the win (3-1). He tossed a season-high eight innings, striking out a season-high six batters. The run charged to him was unearned, dropping his season ERA to 2.28 and the team's, which was third nationally at the start of the week, to 2.07 for the season.
Eagles starter Jacob Russell took the loss (0-8). He allowed just three hits in three innings, but walked eight and gave up seven runs, all earned.
Shaylor's two hits and four RBI led the 49ers. Tilton and Shaylor both scored twice to lead all players. Pegues had a game-high three hits for Central.
Charlotte returns to conference play, hosting a home weekend league series against Fordham, which is in a tie for second in the league. Friday night's matchup begins at 6 p.m.
NOTES: Charlotte is 23-4 at home, with the win total tying for ninth-most in a single season in school history... Charlotte has allowed two or fewer runs in 22 games this season, and is undefeated in those contests... Tilton stole three bases, tying a career high... He has a conference-leading 22 stolen bases this season and 64 for his career, seventh-most in program history... His pair of runs scored gives him a team-best 34 on the year.
