For the first time in 2011, Charlotte scored first but lost the contest as three unearned runs in the fourth inning helped Wake Forest come from behind to win a 7-1 baseball victory on Tuesday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The game was called in the top of the ninth when heavy rains prevented further play. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Charlotte and drops the 49ers to 12-4 on the season. The Demon Deacons improve to 7-9 overall and gives WFU its first road win of the season.
Charlotte slips to 9-1 in games in which it scores first this year.
The 49ers got that early lead with a run in the second inning. Charlotte loaded the bases to start the inning with two hits and a walk. Former East Rowan High School teammates were involved in the scoring play as a sacrifice fly from shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C.) scored catcher Ross Steedley (Granite Quarry, N.C.) to push across the run and take the 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest scored three unearned runs in the fourth on back-to-back sacrifice flies and an RBI single from pinch hitter Jack Carey.
The Demon Deacons extended the lead on a Mac Williamson grand slam in the fifth. It came on a 1-1 pitch after an infield error and a couple of slow infield hits in the heaviest rain of the evening loaded the bases.
Charlotte starter Joe Yermal (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh HS) took the loss. None of the three runs charged to him were earned in 3.2 innings pitched. He allowed two hits and two walks, with three strikeouts.
Wake Forest reliever Justin Van Grouw got the win after four scoreless innings. He gave up just two hits and two walks in the game, striking out two.
Charlotte outfielder Justin Wilson (Canton, N.C. / Pisgah HS) led all players with three hits. Steedley had the only other hit for Charlotte in the contest. Four Demon Deacons had two hits, with Williamson achieving a game-high total of five RBI
The 49ers set a season high with four errors in the contest.
Charlotte takes on another ACC opponent Wednesday night when it travels to Duke for a 6 p.m. contest in Durham.
NOTES: All of Charlotte's four losses have come when scoring two or fewer runs this season. Charlotte has allowed only one run in the second inning this season, while scoring 18, the second-highest total by inning for the team this season... The grand slam was the first hit against Charlotte this season... It was the first for Wake Forest since 2009.
