“Sport is 90% mental and the other half physical,” according to sports legend Yogi Berra. Many Division 1 coaches and athletes know that it is an athlete’s mental strength and resilience which leads to success at this highly competitive level. 49er athletes and teams have the opportunity to work with professionals in sport psychology to train and enhance their mental game. Trainings for individuals and teams are offered every week at Charlotte Athletic Department, and athletes can receive a life skill credit for attending a one-on-one mental skills session.
Office Hours: Mondays 10 AM – 2 PM and Wednesdays 1 PM - 5 PM in the Miltmore-Wallis Athletic Training and Academic Center (ATAC) room A128 (by W. Basketball & W. Volleyball, down the hall on the right).

Dr. Désarée Festa Sport & Performance Psychologist – Available Mondays from 10am – 2pm (Mental Skills Training and Counseling for Athletes)
Désarée specializes in optimizing human performance and working with elite and world renowned athletes and performers. Her experience includes working with Professional, Division I, Olympic/National, and amateur athletes and organizations. Désarée helps her athletes gain the competitive edge in their sport and strengthen their mental resilience by using performance enhancement techniques, research-based approaches, and cutting-edge biofeedback technology. Her goal is to help athletes and organizations strive for their dreams by coaching them on developing a more effective mental mindset and providing tools for success. Désarée also helps athletes address any life issues that may or may not be interfering with their athletic performance.
Désarée Festa is a Sport Psychologist and Director of the Mind Over Body division of Southeast Psych, a private psychology practice located in the SouthPark area of Charlotte, NC. She is a Licensed Psychologist and has extensive training in sport and exercise psychology. Désarée earned her Ph.D. from the Combined Program in Counseling Psychology & School Psychology at Florida State University. She received her Master's degree in Sport Psychology from Florida State University and worked with student-athletes at The College of William & Mary during her doctoral internship. Désarée received her undergraduate degree from Eastern University where she majored in psychology, minored in sport & coaching, and was a student-athlete.
Dr. Patrick Young Performance Enhancement Consultant – Available Wednesdays from 1pm – 5pm (Mental Skills Training)
Patrick specializes in performance enhancement, which includes building athletes’ mental skills and developing their mental toughness. Patrick aims to provide athletes with the psychological tools necessary to put themselves in the best possible situation for success and help them reach their full potential in sport and in life. He is an expert in sport, exercise, and health psychology and has consulted with NCAA Division I and II athletes, junior college athletes, and amateur athletes of all ages.
Patrick provides performance enhancement consulting for Mind Over Body, a division of the private psychology practice Southeast Psych, which is located in the Charlotte, NC area. In addition to consulting, Patrick is a Professor of Psychology at Wingate University, where he teaches Sport and Exercise Psychology, Performance Psychology and Health Psychology, among others.
Patrick Young earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, with an emphasis in Sport and Exercise Psychology, from Florida State University. He earned both his B.A. in psychology and M.A. in academic research and teaching from Humboldt State University. Patrick is in the final stages of completing his certification as a certified consultant with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), which is the most respected international and professional organization within the field of sport and exercise psychology.

What is sport psychology?
Sport psychology focuses on training and enhancing an athlete's mental, emotional, and interpersonal factors which may impact his or her performance and participation in sport. It also assists teams improve their ability to work as a unit and can be an additional resource for coaches looking to increase their team’s performance. A Sport Psychologist is an individual who is licensed as a Psychologist (received doctoral training as a therapist) and has separate and specialized training as a sport psychology/performance enhancement consultant. True Sport Psychologists (both licensed as a psychologist with additional training as a sport psychology/performance enhancement consultant) are limited in number in the United States. A performance enhancement consultant is an individual with training in sport psychology at the Master’s or Doctoral level. Consultants certified through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) have completed approved coursework in sport and exercise psychology and have a standardized number of supervised hours. AASP certified consultants are also limited in number within the United States.
When should you use a sport psychologist?
ANY ATHLETE CAN USE SPORT PSYCHOLOGY. An increasing number of elite athletes and top athletic programs use sport psychology in order to maximize their performance within their sport. If you are an athlete that is experiencing any barriers in your sport or is motivated to achieve your optimal potential, you should definitely consider consulting with an expert in sport psychology. Coaches can also refer athletes to receive individualized and tailored mental skills training. In addition to sport performance enhancement, athletes can meet with the UNCC sport psychology consultant to discuss any personal issues that may or may not be interfering with your performance in sport.
What are common sport psychology topics?
A sport psychologist and consultant can aid teams or individual athletes on the following topics:
- reducing performance anxiety
- getting into “the zone”
- effectively dealing with transition into a higher level of competition
-coping with and recovering from injury
-managing the dual roles of student athlete
-developing positive self-talk
-building or enhancing team communication
-building or enhancing team cohesion
-developing pre-competition routines
-managing intense competition/pressure
What are common life issues an athlete can address with a sport psychologist/consultant?
-concerns about academics
-issues with friends and family
-alcohol and other substance issues
-eating/body image concerns
-better understanding self and others

Yes! Confidential one-on-one sessions are provided to help 49er student-athletes perform to the best of their ability in their sport, in the classroom and in the game of life, unless the athlete specifically states otherwise and is within the limits of North Carolina State Law.
