FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Amanda Goetschius and Darius Law became the seventh and eighth NCAA Indoor All-Americans in Charlotte history today with their performances at the Randal Tyson Track Center. Law is Charlotte's first men's Indoor All-American in the 400m dash and the first men's All-American since Derrick Johnson in 2005. Goetschius became Charlotte's first athlete to claim indoor All-American honors in the 5,000m.
Law competed first for the Niners and ran a 47.12, good for a 12th place finish. Despite not qualifying for the 400m finals tomorrow, Law still obtained all-American status with his 12th place finish. Goetschius competed later in the night and came away with a 9th place finish in the distance event. Her time of 16:06.92 broke her school record in the event by 2.27 seconds, which she set at the Notre Dame Last Chance Qualifier last week.
"Both Amanda and Darius did a great job at their first indoor nationals by both becoming all-Americans and finishing well ahead of where they were ranked entering the competition," said head coach Robert Olesen. "Amanda showed great heart running a strong second half of the race by not giving up and moving from 15th up to 9th in the last six laps and recording a personal best and school record."
The All-American performance is Law's first of his career as the junior has only competed at the NCAA Championships twice, coming in last season's outdoor championships in the same event. He also becomes only the third men's indoor All-American in Charlotte history joining Johnson and Rephel Martin (2000 Outdoor Triple Jump).
"I had a rough start to the season not running as fast as I expected but stayed positive and kept working hard and it paid off as I reached an important goal, becoming an all-American," Law said of his performance.
Goetschius was competing in her second NCAA Championship, but first in track, as her first NCAA appearance came in cross country in 2008 as a sophomore. Her record-breaking run in the 5,000m is the first Charlotte All-American performance in a distance event since Cassie Ficken in the 3,000m in 2005. Goetschius improved her time in the 5,000m by 54 seconds this season.
"It feels great to be an all-American and I want to continue to build on this indoor season and achieve this status in the 10,000m outdoor," Goetschius noted.
The 49ers track and field program has now posted at least one All-American performance in every year since 2003 except for 2008. Charlotte had three All-Americans in 2005 with Ficken, Johnson and Shareese Woods.
The duo and the rest of the Charlotte 49ers track and field squad will now gear up for the 2010 outdoor track season, which begins this coming weekend with the 49er Classic from March 18-20 at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex.
