ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico track and field athletes Kendall Spencer and Warrick Campbell recorded top-10 finishes at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The Lobos competing, which included Ridge Jones, performed well in their final tuneup before next week’s Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships, showing they could compete with the nation’s best athletes.

Spencer kicked off the action in the men’s long jump Saturday, finishing in sixth place with a leap of 24 feet, 8 ½ inches (7.53 meters). He performed well in the preliminary three jumps, rising to sixth place on his second jump.

That mark, which is his second-best distance this year, remained as the sixth-best mark through the final round of jumps.

He was the only collegiate athlete in the field of 16 athletes. Chula Vista Elite jumper Tyron Stewart won with a mark of 26-11 ¾ (8.22m).

Campbell also held his own against a top-notch field, claiming seventh-place in the triple jump Sunday. He registered a distance of 50-10 ¼ (15.50m) with his second jump in the preliminary round, which was enough to advance to the finals.

That mark remained his best through the finals, as he finished as the best of the two collegians in the 10-athlete field. Chris Carter won the event with a mark of 56-3 ¼ (17.15m).

Jones rounded out the three Lobos competing, as he finished with a time of 6.84 seconds in the 60-meter dash. He placed 21st, and was the only collegian in the field.

The Lobos will return to action Thursday when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the three-day Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Air Force.
