INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of New Mexico women’s basketball senior Sara Halasz has been named an official nominee for the Allstate Good Works Team ® by the Women’s Basketball Coaches of America (WBCA). Halasz is one of only 84 NCAA Division I women’s basketball athletes to be named a candidate for the award. The Good Works Team ® honors college basketball players who represent good teamwork, community service and leadership.

Halasz, a sixth-year senior, is a captain for the 2013-14 New Mexico Lobos for Coach Yvonne Sanchez. She has played in every game since missing the 2011-12 and 2010-11 seasons to preseason knee injuries. Halasz is averaging 10.9 points and 6.0 rebounds through seven games this season. She is on pace to become the 18th player in program history to record 1,000 career points.

The Alabama native is a standout in the classroom as well. She has earned multiple Academic All-Mountain West and MW Scholar Athlete awards through her years in the program. The guard has been part of UNM Women’s Hoops teams that have earned WBCA Academic Top 25 rankings every year she has been in Albuquerque. Halasz will complete her Master’s degree by the end of her eligibility with the Lobos.

She is also part of the program’s numerous community service projects. Halasz and her teammates regularly spend their time visiting UNM Children’s Hospital, hosting local Native American youths at clinics and participating in local Down’s syndrome awareness walk among many other projects.

As a nominee for this award, Halasz is now eligible to be voted to the Allstate Good Works Team ® by a committee that includes former All-American Tamika Catchings. Those elected to the team will be invited to the Women’s Final Four in Nashville and the 2014 WBCA Convention in Dallas.

Halasz and the rest of the Lobos will return to the court this Saturday when they host the New Mexico State Aggies in The Pit at 7 p.m. on December 7.
