The University of New Mexico Lobos’ showdown on Saturday afternoon will be their 13th match of their 17-match regular season schedule. New Mexico is 7-3-2 to this point, and they are the leaders of Conference USA with a record 3-0-1 in C-USA. As Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein wrote in his weekly “FishBlog”, the Cherry & Silver are “finding their form”.

Last Time Out

The Lobos are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Florida International last weekend at the UNM Soccer Complex. UNM got on the board first thanks to Christopher Wehan’s first career goal and won the match in overtime with a goal from James Rogers. Florida Atlantic will be the second opponent in as many weeks making their first-ever trip to the UNM Soccer Complex, which ranks annually in the NCAA’s top ten in attendance.

Reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week

New Mexico goalkeeper Michael Lisch was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week. The senior keeper recorded a pair of wins for the Lobos who seized first place in the C-USA standings.

Lisch began his week with a shutout against Tulsa in the NSCAA’s “National Game of the Week”. He recorded a pair of saves in his conference-leading fifth shutout of the season. During the 1-0 win at nationally-ranked Tulsa, Lisch pushed his scoreless streak to 306 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.

He and the Lobos would post another conference win with a 2-1 decision over Florida International in overtime. While he did concede a goal, FIU’s lone score is the only goal given up by Lisch in his last 404 minutes between the pipes.

RPI on the Rise

In the last two weeks, the NCAA has released their first pair of RPI rankings. The Lobos came in 16th going into the FIU match, and they are now 14th in the nation in RPI. The RPI rankings are one of the key factors considered by the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament Selection committee at the end of the season.

First Impressions

The Lobos’ last two victories, wins at Tulsa and over Florida International, have come in the first two career starts for redshirt freshman Chris Gurule. The defender helped post a shutout at Tulsa, which included him being credited for a team save. He was this week’s guest on Coach Fishbein’s weekly show “Fish Off The Pitch”.

*A special note

Saturday afternoon’s match against Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. (MT) falls during the pregame festivities of Lobo Football’s home game later that day. Because the parking lots used for soccer matches are tailgating lots designated for football and open for tailgating that day, parking at Saturday afternoon’s soccer match will cost $10. This is the normal cost for tailgating in the lots on football game days. Fans who pay to park for soccer can stay and use their spot for pregame festivities for the Lobo Football game at 7 p.m. versus Utah State. Please plan and carpool accordingly and we appreciate your understanding with this.
