ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women's cross country team ranked seventh in the most recent edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings released Tuesday.

The women registered their highest rank of the season, moving from 15th in the nation to seventh, and also lead the USTFCCCA’s Mountain Region Rankings.

The Lobos leaped into the top 10 after tallying a stellar second-place finish at the highly competitive Notre Dame Invitational over the weekend.

Newcomer Sammy Silva paced New Mexico, taking third place overall with a superlative time of 17 minutes, 4 seconds. The Lobos also placed two more in the top-15,  with Charlotte Arter placing 10th (17:18.7) and Calli Thackery claiming 11th (17.19.3). Overall, five of the Lobos’ top six finishers made their UNM debuts at Notre Dame.

Subsequently, the women recorded their highest ranking since since Oct. 11, 2011, when they also ranked seventh.

New Mexico also are the top-ranked team in the USTFCCCA Mountain Region ranking that was released Monday. The Lobos held the second slot for the first four weeks of the season, but switched places with Colorado in Monday’s rankings.

The Lobos' men squad was also ranked in the national poll, as they were tabbed 25th. This makes UNM one of only 10 Division I institutions with both their men and women teams ranked in the top 25, joining Arkansas, Colorado, Georgetown, Minnesota, Oregon, Princeton, Providence, Oklahoma State and Villanova.

New Mexico will return to action on Oct. 18 as they head to the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.
