ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Korean Junior National Team (U18) made a pit stop at the University of New Mexico to compete against the Lobo’s men’s and women’s tennis teams on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The Lobos played against six members of the Korean National Team in two sessions of singles, doubles, and mixed (co-ed) doubles matches. UNM battled against the highly competitive Korean National Team and ended the day with mixed scores.

The Korean National Team stopped in N.M. on its way to San Luis, Mexico where they will be competing in the Junior Davis Tennis Cup. Head coach Doug MacCurdy, a UNM tennis alumni, wanted his team to gain some extra experience in a new atmosphere before heading to the big tournament.

“In Korea we are at sea level so I wanted the team to practice playing at a higher altitude to prepare for the Junior Davis Cup,” coach MacCurdy said.

UNM’s Michaela Bezdickova started off the day in a long-fought battle against Korea’s Kim Da Bin. Bezdickova fought till the end but eventually came up short against Da Bin, 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-2. In the second session of the day, Bezdickova came out with the victory over An Yu Jin, 6-3, 6-2.

Lobo Samir Iftikhar began his day by defeating Korea’s Hong Sun Cheon after two competitive sets. Sun Cheon is currently ranked No. 26 in the world by the International Tennis Federation. Iftikhar won with a final score of 6-4, 6-4.

The Lobos women’s team saw more success in the doubles category. Bezdickova and Natasha Smith defeated Korea’s Da Bin and An Yu Jin, 8-6. Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier also took the win in their match as they defeated Da Bin and Choi Su Yeon, 8-3. The men’s team came up short in both of their doubles matches.

“On the women’s side, I was very pleased with how we competed,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “Natasha Smith had an excellent day picking up wins in singles and in doubles.  I was also excited to see how well our two freshmen, Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier competed in doubles.”

The Lobos were thrilled to host the exhibition match and show the Korean National Team a welcoming experience.

“This was an awesome day of tennis for us.  We can’t thank the Korean Federation and their coaches and players enough for coming to Albuquerque to play this exhibition,” Jasper said.
