University of New Mexico Athletics and the Lobo Club have named Ed Manzanares the Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts at UNM. Manzanares, who has been the Athletic Director at New Mexico Highlands for the last seven years, replaces Rob Clark, who recently left to become the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development at Georgia State University.

“We are extremely fortunate to add someone of Ed’s caliber and experience to our team,” said Associate Athletic Director for Development Lee De Leon. “Ed is a native New Mexican who graduated from the University of New Mexico and has connections all over this state.”

Manzanares will spearhead the major gift efforts for Lobo Athletics. As the Director of Athletics at Highlands, he managed all aspects of their 14 athletics programs and 458 student-athletes. During his tenure there, he created the athletic department’s first corporate sponsorship campaign, oversaw $2 million in facility improvements, and secured the largest one-time gift in NMHU Athletics history.

He received his bachelor’s degree from UNM in Communication and Broadcast Journalism in 1995 and his Master’s in Sports Business Administration from Highlands in 2010. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA). Prior to becoming the Athletics Director, Manzanares was the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Highlands. When he received the job in 2000, he was the youngest head coach in the NCAA for Division II.

“I am really excited to join the Lobos! It’s my alma mater and I care a great deal about the University and its athletic department,” said Manzanares. “Paul Krebs has put together a first-class staff at UNM and I feel very fortunate to be joining it.”

Manzanares will begin his duties with UNM on September 16th. His primary responsibilities will include securing major gifts of $25,000 or more, serving as the primary fundraiser for new or renovated facilities, overseeing the planned giving (Forever Lobo Society) and endowment (Lobo Legacy) programs, and managing the Lobo Champions Council – the most prestigious giving society within the Lobo Club.

“Ed is a big-time hire for us, and we are excited for him to get started,” said Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs. “We feel that his extensive experience in college athletics and his ability to build great relationships will make him an outstanding fundraiser for UNM.”

The Lobo Club is the Gateway to Giving for University of New Mexico Athletics that raises money for all 21 teams and over 450 student-athletes. During the 2012-13 fiscal year, the Lobo Club raised over $10.3 million – the second best fundraising year in the history of UNM Athletics.
