Weekly Game Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a taxing east coast swing to Virginia Commonwealth University and Georgetown, Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein and the Lobos are looking forward to the comforts of home. New Mexico went to double overtime in both of their matches against the Rams and the Hoyas. That meant as many as 214 minutes played for some of the Lobos within 48 hours. UNM scored one goal in each match, which included a game-winning goal in double overtime versus Georgetown from Nicholas Rochowski, as they came back from the east coast with a win and a draw.

“I was really proud of our guys and couldn’t be happier with effort on Sunday (at Georgetown). We played with a little different starting lineup and gave some different guys some run. A few people stepped up. Defensively, we were great. The guys were focused, fit and confident. I can’t say enough about our team, commented Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein.

Enter Santa Clara and Cal State Northridge.

This year’s TLC Plumbing and Utility Lobo Invitational features a pair of challenges for the cherry and silver. A hungry Santa Clara team that would love nothing more than to upset the ninth-ranked Lobos and an eleventh-ranked Cal State Northridge team that wants to show they are just as good.

The mission for Coach Fishbein and company is simple. Catch fire offensively like their seven-goal output against Villanova and keep a clean sheet. New Mexico defenders and goalkeepers alike consider shutouts their goal in every match, which is something UNM has done only once this season.

What will help them achieve their goals? Part of the joy of playing in the UNM Soccer Complex is playing in front of the boisterous, passionate Lobo fans. New Mexico had nearly 2,800 fans in their opener and is hoping to see even more fans in their pair of night games this weekend.

A dedicated fan base is nothing new for New Mexico Soccer as the Lobos have been among the nation’s leaders in attendance for over a decade. What is new is the intensity this season. In many ways those who come to the pitch to watch Lobo Soccer are participants as well as spectators. Vuvuzelas, cow bells and drums make games at the UNM Soccer Complex an experience. The volume from the home crowd in the opener against Villanova reached a deafening pitch at times, especially during goals.

The Lobo attack has been balanced this season with five different Lobos finding the back of the net so far. It’s been this attacking core that has been good for the Lobos.

“I think, unlike in years past, we have a lot of balance on offense. We have an attacking core of guys that are really good and give us a lot of depth in the attacking third,” Fishbein noted after the 7-2 win over Villanova in the home opener.

James Rogers, Niko Hansen and Michael Calderon have each tallied multiple goals this season while Riley McGovern and Nicholas Rochowski have also scored the first goals of their careers.

While the team is focused on their goals and taking their matches one at a time, they do want the fans to look ahead.  The hope is to take the environment at the UNM Soccer Complex to the next level. Friday and Sunday night are great opportunity for fans to catch an exciting Lobo Soccer team as well as be a part of the experience.
