Weekend Match Notes (PDF)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The ninth-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos will take to the road for a pair of matches at Virginia Commonwealth University and eleventh-ranked Georgetown University this weekend. Both programs were NCAA Tournament participants a season ago with the Hoyas advancing to the national championship match before losing to Indiana.

The Lobo attack came out to play in New Mexico’s season opener as Coach Fishbein and company scored seven goals against Villanova. Michael Calderon, James Rogers and Niko Hansen all scored two goals apiece while Riley McGovern recorded his first career goal. The match seemed to play out at an accelerated pace thanks to the boisterous environment of nearly 3,000 fans armed with vuvuzelas and drums at the UNM Soccer Complex. The atmosphere even drew praise from UNM’s opponent.

As exciting as the team’s offensive production was, the team and Coach Fishbein were quick to point out the team didn’t achieve one of its most important goals against Villanova: a clean sheet. New Mexico was unable to shutout the Wildcats conceding two goals, but it will again be one of the team’s top goals this weekend in Virginia and Washington D.C.

The trip out to the commonwealth of Virginia and the nation’s capital mark the first away matches of the regular season. The Lobos will fly home for a long home stand, which includes the 2013 TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational. The Cherry & Silver will play Santa Clara, Cal State Northridge and Drake within a seven day span (September 13 – 20) in Albuquerque.

His two-goal, one-assist performance in the 7-2 win over Villanova earned Michael Calderon a spot on two national weekly award lists. Calderon was named to the National Team of the Week by and College Soccer News.
