Jim Garren enters his second season as the top assistant to University of New Mexico men's golf coach Glen Millican. He helped the Lobos win a Mountain West championship during his first season with the team in 2013-14.
The Lobos produced a pair of PING All-West Region and All-Mountain West selections in juniors Gavin Green and Victor Perez under Garren's tutelage.
Garren comes to UNM after a five-year stint as assistant men's golf coach and director of recruiting at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Among Southern Miss' accomplishments on the field of play during Garren's tenure were:
Winning the 2011 Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Intercollegiate championship.
Capturing runner-up honors at the 2012 Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
Finishing as 2011 UALR First Tee Intercollegiate runner-up.
Finishing as 2011 BankCorpSouth Intercollegiate runner-up.
Finishing as 2010 Conference USA Championship runner-up.
Finishing as 2010 UTA Waterchase Intercollegiate runner-up.
Third place at the 2009 Memphis Intercollegiate
Third place at the Aldila Scenic City Intercollegiate.
The Golden Eagles' second-place finish in the conference tournament in 2010 tied for the school's best conference finish ever. Their 18-hole score of 274 during the 2010 Sam Hill Intercollegiate was the lowest 18-hole team score ever.
Garren also coached one individual champion in Derek Plucienski at the 2010 UTA Waterchase Intercollegiate, and three other runner-up performances -- two by Pluncienski (at the 2010 Sam Hall Intercollegiate and the 2011 Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Intercollegiate) and one by Wes Carter at the 2010 Conference USA Championship.
Under Garren, Plucienski had the lowest 18-hole score (63 at the 2010 Sam Hill Intercollegiate), 36-hole score (133 at the 2010 UTA Waterchase Intercollegiate) and 54-hole score (201at the 2010 Sam Hill Intercollegiate) in school history.
The Golden Eagles also produced four Academic All-Americans during Garren's five-year term (the school had two all-time prior to his arrival), two Academic All-Conference selections, one first-team All-Conference USA selection (Paul Apyan in 2010), one second-team All-CUSA selection in Plucienski (2011) and three Conference USA Players of the Week.
