SAN DIEGO -- The University of New Mexico softball team fell, 4-1, at San Diego State in its Mountain West opener on Thursday night against the Aztecs.
The Lobos (16-21, 0-1 MW) made an error in the bottom of the third that translated into four unearned runs for preseason league favorite SDSU (20-12, 1-0 MW), and UNM wasn't able to recover.
New Mexico and SDSU play at 7 p.m. MT tomorrow evening and finish the series at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday.
Freshman Courtney Geith and redshirt junior Jordyn Bledsoe led the Lobos with two hits apiece while sophomore Mia Hignojos and senior Kaity Ingram each had one hit. Redshirt freshman Karissa Haleman scored UNM's lone run.
Freshman Lauren Soles (7-9) takes the loss. The Lobo lefty threw the entire game and in 24 batters faced, allowed eight hits and four unearned runs while walking four and striking out three.
San Diego State's Rebecca Arbino improved to 11-7 with the win. In 30 batters faced, Arbino allowed six hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out seven.
San Diego State 4, Lobos 1
The Aztecs led off the bottom of the third with a ground out to shortstop, and followed with a single through the right side by Kayla Jordan. During the next at-bat, Jordan stole second and then advanced to third on an illegal pitch. The next batter for San Diego State drew a walk and then stole second base, putting even more pressure on the Lobo defense. Kristin May hit a grounder to UNM pitcher Lauren Soles, who committed an error on the throw which allowed May to reach and Jordan to score.
A ground out to Soles followed and put the Lobos one out away from getting out of the inning, but reigning MW Player of the Week Patrice Jackson stepped up to bat and homered to left field, bringing around three unearned runs and putting the home team ahead, 4-0. Two walks by SDSU followed before another ground out to Soles ended the inning.
New Mexico was able to put up one run in the top of the sixth inning as Karissa Haleman drew a walk with one out away and singles by Mia Hignojos and Jordyn Bledsoe followed to load the bases. A line out to the Aztecs' pitcher by Jordan Sjostrand put the outs at two, but a single to second base by Courtney Geith drove in Haleman and put the Lobos on the board, 4-1. A fielder's choice resulted in the third out at third base.
The Lobos had a number of scoring opportunities throughout the game and left 10 runs out on the field.
Bledsoe singled up the middle with two outs away in the second inning, but again, the next Lobo batter was fanned.
San Diego State committed three errors in the top of the fourth inning and each bag had a Lobo on it with two outs -- but another strikeout left the runners stranded.
Aside from the one costly error, New Mexico was able to work its way out of some dangerous situations on defense.
A first-inning double play in which Ingram scooped up a ground ball, tagged a runner leaving third base and then threw the runner out a first base got UNM out of a one-out, two-runners-on situation.
SDSU's Jackson led off the bottom of the second with a double to right center, but didn't reach home as the next three batters grounded out to the pitcher, popped out to the shortstop and grounded out to the shortstop, respectively.
An Aztec runner on and one out away in the bottom of the fourth was held, and in the bottom of the fifth, when San Diego State led off with back-to-back singles, the Lobos threw out the lead runner for the first out, got a strike out by Soles to take care of the second out and then UNM's defense picked off the runner at third to end the inning and protect home plate. The pick off involved Tellez (catcher), Ingram (3B), Hignojos (2B), Bledsoe (SS), Sjostrand (1B) and Ingram.
