This meet will be the Cougars final tune-up before they travel to Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 23-24 for the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Recapping New Balance Invitation and Kent Taylor Invitational

Last weekend the team split up as seven athletes competed at the New Balance Invitational. Six athletes put themselves in the record books on the all-time top 10 lists, led by Dena O'Brien, who set a school record in the 5,000-meter run.

Multiple Honors for O'Brien

Sophomore Dena O'Brien is off to a great start, building on a successful cross country season. O'Brien won the 5K at the New Balance Invitational as they ran a school record 16:40.39, finishing six seconds ahead the runner-up. For her efforts O'Brien earned Southern Conference Athlete of the Week for Indoor Track & Field. O'Brien was also one of 104 women in NCAA DI to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) 2011 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status, announced today.

O'Brien set school record in the 5K and 6K for cross country and finished 11th at the NCAA Southeast Regional with a time of 20:40 for the 6K race. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2011.
