WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Men's tennis sophomore Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Freshman Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) was selected as the Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Tim Smith earned his second consecutive Coach of the Year, and third overall.
Last season, Rossi earned both Rookie and Player of the Year honors. In the 2011-12 season, he won a total of 22 matches between singles and doubles. Almost every time he took the court, Rossi was facing off against the opposition's best players.
Dube enjoyed a very successful first season in a Red Foxes uniform. He went 23-10 overall in singles, including 14-4 in dual matches and a perfect 5-0 against MAAC opponents. After starting the season at the sixth singles' position, Dube improved as he moved up against tougher competition. He was a combined 10-1 when playing at the third, fourth and fifth spots.
Both Rossi and Dube were also selected to the All-MAAC First Team at the first and fifth positions, respectively. Joining them were sophomore Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) at the fourth singles slot and Dalen Klassen at sixth. The doubles combinations of Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) and Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.); Rossi and Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands); and Billy Bishop (Houston, Texas) and Klassen were all named to the Second Team at first, second and third doubles, respecitively.
Additionally four student-athletes from the men's tennis team were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Himmelsbach, Van Eck, Rossi and Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) were all selected. It is the third time that Himmelsbach, a senior, has earned the academic honor.
The awards were announced Friday evening at the postseason awards banquet at Mercer Park, there the MAAC Championships will take place. The Red Foxes are the top seed, after completing their third consecutive undefeated season, and will face fourth-seeded Saint Peter's at 9 a.m. at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. The championship match will be held on Sunday at 9 a.m.
